What is Ayurveda?

In Ayurveda, our doshas are not only influenced by the seasons, but also by different phases of life and times of the day:
Kapha (Spring, Childhood, Morning 6–10 AM & Evening 6–10 PM):
A phase of growth and resilience, where nourishment and stability thrive—yet without balance, sluggishness can set in. Think young children, they're kinda wet & sticky, heal fast and have so much restoring growth— just like spring!
Pitta (Summer, Adulthood, Midday 10 AM–2 PM & Midnight 10 PM–2 AM):
A phase of peak energy, digestion, and transformation—when metabolism is at its strongest and dedication to skin health is key. Think of that feeling you get in the summer (annually) and in midday (daily); dazzling, significant, productive, maybe even fulfilling.
Vata (Winter, Mature Age, Early Morning 2–6 AM & Late Afternoon 2–6 PM):
A time of movement, creativity, and change, but also dryness and instability if imbalanced. These are the years of wisdom and transition, where nourishment is key to counteracting the body’s natural dryness phase. Think cold, harsh and depleting— just like the winter! Understanding Kapha Season
Kapha is associated with the elements of earth and water, embodying qualities of stability, moisture, and heaviness. During winter, Kapha accumulates due to the season’s cold and sedentary nature. As we transition into spring, this buildup can lead to sluggishness, congestion, and excess mucus in the body, often manifesting as seasonal allergies, dull skin, puffiness, and lethargy. If left unchecked, an imbalanced Kapha can contribute to weight gain, sinus issues, water retention, and a sense of stagnation or even depression. Spring is the season to lighten up, shake off the heaviness, and embrace movement and renewal.
Just as we engage in spring cleaning for our homes, Ayurveda encourages cleansing the body and mind during this season. Detoxifying practices—whether through diet, movement, or lifestyle shifts—help flush out accumulated toxins, while decluttering our physical and mental spaces creates a sense of clarity and renewal. Kapha types especially benefit from eliminating excess, whether in food, routines, or material belongings, to prevent stagnation and restore balance.
Even if your dominant dosha is Pitta or Vata, Kapha still plays a role in your life through seasonal, daily, and life-stage cycles. Adjusting to the Kapha season keeps you in harmony with nature’s rhythms. Pitta individuals may use this time to simplify and cool their environment, preventing burnout, while Vata types can focus on clearing mental clutter and reinforcing stability. Honoring Kapha’s influence ensures balance across all doshas, making spring an essential time for renewal, regardless of your constitution.
Lightening Up the Diet for Spring
Kapha season calls for a diet that counterbalances its heavy, moist nature. This means focusing on foods that are:

LIGHT- Fresh vegetables, bitter greens, sprouts, and legumes help clear out excess Kapha.

WARMING- Spices like ginger, turmeric, black pepper, mustard seeds, and cinnamon stimulate digestion and circulation.

DRYING OUT- Winter (Vata season) was all about nourishing foods, but that season is gone and so is the diet; make sure your intakes of dairy, refined sugars, and alcohol are at bay, they can really get in the way of the lifting & healing of Kapha! Bonus, this adjustment helps prevent congestion & bloating. If you are a meat eater, make the switch to lean protein; like chicken and fish (tofu, too, if you're feeling adventurous).

ENERGIZING- Eating lighter meals, reducing heavy carbohydrates, and incorporating herbal teas (like tulsi, dandelion, and fennel) can improve metabolism and energy levels.

DETOXING- The spring is a much better time for your body to do a Detox, compared to the ever-so-popular ‘Dry January,’ which is in a season where your body requires more nourishment; Spring is restorative and healing, detoxing from alcohol and other habits in a natural cycle that supports the efforts and energy is more beneficial and successful!

One simple yet effective Kapha-balancing morning ritual is drinking warm lemon water, which helps cleanse the system and stimulate digestion.
Fasting or intermittent fasting is also encouraged in Ayurveda during this time to support natural detoxification and digestive fire (Agni). A simple approach is to follow a 12- to 16-hour fasting window, such as finishing dinner by 7 PM and not eating again until 7 AM or later. For those new to fasting, a gentle start could be skipping heavy breakfasts in favor of warm herbal teas or light fruit to ease digestion and promote detoxification without strain.
Lifestyle Adjustments for Kapha Season

Wake Up Early:
Kapha energy is strongest in the morning (6–10 AM), so waking up early prevents sluggishness and heaviness.
Exercise Daily:
Opt for dynamic activities like brisk walking, yoga, or dancing to keep energy flowing, especially in that early morning.

Lymphatic Drainage:
Stimulate circulation and lymphatic drainage with a dry brush before showering to invigorate the skin. This same practice is important for your face.
Gua Sha has a misconception: it is incorrectly represented on Instagram, and does not actually do lymphatic drainage. It breaks up adhesions in the fascia, which is then cleared by the lymphatic fluid.
